President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed her government will send a forceful diplomatic letter to the United States after a young Mexican man died while detained at the Glades County Detention Center in Florida, under the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
"Very regrettable, yesterday, and today a stronger diplomatic letter is being sent," Sheinbaum declared during a press conference held in Cancรบn, Quintana Roo.
According to initial reports, the cause of death was recorded as suicide. However, the president demanded a thorough investigation by US authorities. "The report says the young man took his own life, but we want a deep investigation, and this simply cannot keep happening," she emphasized.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) backed the presidential stance, calling such deaths "unacceptable" and announcing it will use "all legal and diplomatic channels" to demand clarification of this and similar cases.
The case adds to a growing list of incidents involving Mexican citizens in US immigration detention centers, an issue that has escalated on the bilateral agenda since the tightening of immigration policies under the Donald Trump administration.
Foreign Minister Juan Ramรณn de la Fuente and Undersecretary Roberto Velasco are analyzing additional measures that could include formal complaints before international human rights bodies.
Our Take
The death of a Mexican citizen under foreign government custody cannot be normalized. A diplomatic letter is a first step, but Mexico must go further: demand immediate consular access, independent monitoring of detention conditions, and if necessary, bring these cases before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Strong words must translate into concrete actions.
