India Sends 2.5-Ton Medical Aid to Afghanistan After Pakistan's Kabul Airstrike
India Delivers Emergency Medical Aid to Kabul
Four days after Pakistan's devastating airstrike on Kabul's Omid drug rehabilitation centre killed over 400 people and injured more than 250, India on Friday delivered a major medical aid package to Afghanistan.
Background
Pakistan launched the airstrike on the Omid hospital and rehabilitation centre in Kabul on the night of March 16. The attack, carried out during the holy month of Ramzan, drew widespread international condemnation. Pakistan claimed it 'precisely targeted military installations and terrorist support infrastructure,' a claim rejected by Afghanistan.
India's Response
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated: 'To support the medical treatment and swift recovery of those injured in the heinous attack on 16 March, India delivers a 2.5-ton consignment of emergency medicines, medical disposables, kits and equipment to Kabul.'
India had condemned the attack on March 17 as a 'barbaric' act and 'a blatant assault on Afghanistan's sovereignty', calling it a direct threat to regional peace and stability. The MEA specifically called out Pakistan's 'reckless behaviour' and 'desperate acts of violence beyond its borders.'
Key Points
- 2.5 tons of emergency medicines and medical equipment delivered to Kabul
- Pakistan airstrike killed 400+, injured 250+ at Omid rehabilitation centre
- Attack during Ramzan drew global condemnation
- India's third and sharpest statement on Pakistan's attacks on Afghanistan in one month
- Omid hospital established in 2016 — treated hundreds, provided vocational training
Analysis
This represents India's strongest diplomatic pushback against Pakistan's military operations in Afghanistan. The humanitarian gesture comes amid heightened regional tensions from the broader West Asia conflict — the Strait of Hormuz closure has already claimed an Indian merchant navy captain's life near Dubai. Captain Rakesh Ranjan Singh died of a heart attack on March 18 when his oil tanker could not cross the strait.
India is positioning itself firmly as a humanitarian partner to Afghanistan while Pakistan faces increasing international isolation over the Kabul strikes. Oman's Foreign Minister has also weighed in, calling the US-Israel attacks on Iran 'unlawful' while describing Iran's retaliation against Gulf states as both 'inevitable' and 'completely unacceptable.'
